Jaisalmer, a historic fort in northern India, is renowned for its stunning architecture and location along the ancient Silk Route. Jaisalmer is nestled in the Thar desert in Rajasthan, near Pakistan, a truly unique and breathtaking region. This fort became a popular destination for traders in the 12th century, contributing to the area’s affluence.
The fort and much of the city are built from a unique, golden-yellow sandstone. However, after centuries, many of the city’s buildings had deteriorated beyond repair and met new building regulations, and these structures had to be carefully dismantled. All of the structures have since been rebuilt using the same golden stone and traditional carving techniques.
The old panels salvaged from the original crumbling buildings were discharged and can now be found in reclaim yards across northern India. At Wilstone, we ethically source all our Jaisalmer stone from trusted dealers, ensuring that the story of this beautiful, hand-carved golden stone can continue.
