Diwali is a religious festival that originated in India and now celebrated all over the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. The festival of lights lasts 5 days every year and marks the start of the Hindu New Year. The word Diwali comes from the word deepavali, which means ‘rows of lighted lamps’ in the ancient language of Sanskrit and during the five days of celebration people decorate their homes, watch fireworks, eat sweets and spend time with family. Homes, shops and streets are filled with diyas (oil lamps) to honour the Hindu Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The lights are said to help Lakshmi find her way, bringing prosperity into homes for the year.
It is also a celebration of good triumphing over evil and different regions have different legends to represent this. In Northern Indian Hindus celebrate the return of Gods Rama and Sita to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the evil King. In Bengal people worship the Goddess Kali, destroyer of evil forces; and in Nepal people celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory over the wicked King Narakaasura.
